Lambeth Housing has been rocked by a multi-million pound scandal, as it lurches from one crisis to another under Labour.
News of 1,000 Council homes being empty has been followed by a shocking £6.4 million overspend. Millions were handed out to private landlords for temporary homes that were never filled. Housing services now face new cuts to balance the books.
Almost 1000 homes are lying empty in Lambeth say new figures.
But cuts will not help the 13,000 people currently waiting to be housed as the cash-strapped Council says it cannot afford to refit empty homes so that new tenants can move in.
Shockingly, Lambeth has now started smashing up homes it is leaving empty to guard against squatters rather than just pay for the refurbishment.
"This is a terrible mess to be in," said local Lib Dem Cllr Jeremy Clyne. "Empty houses don't help the families who need homes nor the Council which needs the rent income."
"On top of this, Labour has overspent on temporary accommodation that wasn't even used. Such incompetence is absolutely scandalous."
