'Lambeth's Vice Squad must be reinstated to deal with the problems and the nuisance caused to residents by kerb crawling and prostitution in the Borough' says Chris Nicholson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Streatham. His comments came after the high profile mounted police operation to clear prostitutes from Garrads Road and Tooting Bec Common and complaints from residents around Brixton Hill and Josephine Avenue about an upsurge in nuisance caused by kerb crawlers and prostitutes in the area. Lambeth's Vice Squad was scrapped in May.
Chris added 'I met with Sharon Rowe, Lambeth's Borough Police Commander on Tuesday and raised the great concern of residents about the abolition of the Vice Squad and the problems that this is already causing. I do not accept that Safer Neighbourhood Teams alone can deal with this problem, which is at its worst in the late evening and at night when the Safer Neighbourhood Teams are usually not operating. High profile mounted police operations on Tooting Bec Common may make good headlines but are not the answer. Consistent long term police work through a Vice Squad and Safer Neighbourhood Teams and working with prostitutes, who are victims themselves, to help them out of prostitution is a much more effective approach.'
