Local Lib Dem Chris Nicholson was shocked to learn that all regulated rail fares from Streatham stations will rise by at least 6% in January. In the case of some fares on First Capital Connect services from Streatham Station it will be a whopping 9%.
Not only will this hit local residents hard in these difficult economic times but also, when fuel duty increases for motorists are being frozen by the government, it will force more people onto the roads increasing congestion and pollution. The Government should be encouraging people to use public transport but instead, through failing to invest and by pushing up prices, commuters are getting a second class service at first class fares.
Liberal Democrats believe rail fares should be frozen and that some of the extra borrowing being undertaken by the Government to boost the economy should be used to improve our rail system, so easing overcrowding and improving services.
