Liberal Democrats condemn go-ahead for Heathrow third runway

"Bad for Streatham residents and disastrous for efforts to tackle global climate change" is how Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Streatham Chris Nicholson described the Labour Government's approval of plans to build a third runway at Heathrow airport.
"Residents of Streatham are already plagued by aircraft noise. I am frequently woken before 5 am by planes passing overhead and I know many other residents are similarly affected. The third runway will mean double the number of flights and double the disturbance.
But even more important is the effect on climate change. This decision blows a hole through the Labour Government's claim to be concerned about climate change. Heathrow airport will be by far the greatest single generator of CO2 emissions in the UK. This decision shatters Gordon Brown's claim to be leading the world on climate change"
