Liberal Democrats call for the UK to stop arming Israel

Chris Nicholson has joined party leader Nick Clegg in condemning the suffering of thousands of innocent Palestinians as a result of Israel's military bombardment of Gaza.
Neither Chris nor Nick Clegg opposes the right of Israel to exist. "Israel has every right to defend itself", wrote Clegg in the Guardian (07/01/09). "But its approach is self-defeating: the overwhelming use of force, the unacceptable loss of civilian lives is radicalising moderate opinion among Palestinians."
"The Government should have told Israel that its actions are unacceptable a long time ago", says Chris. "Gordon Brown must stop selling Israel key equipment for planes being used to drop bombs on innocent civilians."
Many Liberal Democrats marched on the 3rd of January in the 12, 000-strong demonstration to end the violence, where Sarah Teather MP called for a suspension of the new EU trade agreement with Israel.
Chris Nicholson welcomes Israel's declaration to finally call a ceasefire but says that this "should have happened a long time ago".
