For years local residents and local Liberal Democrats have been calling for there to be a pedestrian phase to the lights at the junction of Cavendish Rd (the South Circular) and Clapham Common Southside. Many local residents use the crossing when going to Clapham South tube, local schools or Tesco.
Local Lib Dem Councillor Darren Sanders says "Crossing the road here is all too often like a dance with death. Residents raise this issue with me time and time again. Transport for London is responsible for this road but Labour Mayor Ken Livingstone resolutely refused to take action. We hoped things might change under Tory Mayor Boris Johnson but TfL are still refusing to do anything. They say that they might look at it again next year; we say that is not good enough."
Liberal Democrat Greater London Assembly Member and Chair of the GLA Transport Committee Caroline Pidgeon has added her voice to the campaign by calling on Tory Mayor Boris Johnson to visit the junction to see the dangers for himself.
Local Liberal Democrats are now collecting a petition urging action. Local resident and Liberal Democrat Parliamentary campaigner Chris Nicholson commented "It is astonishing that there is no proper crossing here. When going to work by tube I always cross here and it is so dangerous. Please help us keep the pressure on TFL by signing the petition below.
