Transport for London have agreed to investigate ways to improve pedestrian safety at the junction of Cavendish Rd and Clapham Common Southside, following a campaign by local Liberal Democrats.
Transport for London officers met with Chris Nicholson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Streatham, Liberal Democrat GLA member Caroline Pidgeon and local Liberal Democrat Cllr Darren Sanders at a site meeting on Friday, September 25th. They discussed options for improving the junction and said they would start investigating detailed plans at the start of the year.
Liberal Democrat GLA member Caroline Pidgeon said 'It is very clear that there is an urgent need for pedestrian crossing facilities at this junction. In the short time we were there, we saw several near misses. '
Chris Nicholson added "I cross at this junction on my way to work and it is so dangerous. Not only is there no pedestrian phase to the lights but you cannot see whether the lights are green or red so you do not know when it is safe to cross. Whilst I am pleased that TfL have agreed to investigate options to improve the junction I am concerned that they will not be starting for some months and then the process will take a long time. Action needs to be taken urgently to make this junction safe for pedestrians"
