Stay safe on holiday, says Chris Nicholson

If you are planning to go somewhere nice this year, we at the Streatham Lib Dems would like to encourage you to make sure you look after your friends', your family's and your own health this summer by taking a few helpful precautions.

"One of the most important things is to get hold of a European Health Insurance Card," says Chris Nicholson. This entitles UK residents to reduced or free necessary medical treatment whilst in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.

Many people aren't aware that when in Europe, you should call 112 if you are in an emergency situation. This even works elsewhere, including the USA, when calling from a mobile phone.

"I have also found out about a clever way of indicating who to call in such a situation," says Chris. "Put the letters ICE next to a name on your mobile phone, and ambulance drivers will call that person." ICE stands for In Case of an Emergency, and is growing in popularity across the world.

If you are travelling to an area particularly affected by swine flu, there's a lot of information and advice out there. See more at http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Swineflu/DG_177834. Travellers returning with flu-like symptoms are advised to call NHS Direct on 0845 4647. And remember - swine flu is not the only issue. It's advisable to find out about any vaccinations you might need at least six weeks in advance.
